Hail damage almost never looks like what people picture — a hole punched through the roof. It looks like nothing, from the ground, for a year or two. Here’s what to actually look for.
These are the same hail-damage signs our crews document every spring on roofs across Prosper, Frisco, McKinney, Mansfield, and Cleburne, where North Texas storms routinely leave damage that looks like nothing from the driveway.
The 5 Signs of Hail Damage Most Homeowners Miss
- Dented soft metal, not shingles. Check your gutters, roof vents, AC unit fins, and window screens. Soft metal dents from hail the same size that only bruises a shingle — so damaged soft metal is often the first visible proof a storm hit hard enough to matter, even when the shingles look clean.
- Granule loss in the gutters. After a storm, granules (the sandy coating on shingles) can wash off into your gutters and downspouts. A little is normal wear; a noticeable pile after one specific storm is a sign.
- Soft spots you can feel, not see. Fractured matting (the crack under the shingle surface) doesn’t always show visually right away — sometimes the shingle feels slightly soft or spongy underfoot before it shows any color change.
- Random dark or discolored patches, not a pattern. Hail hits randomly, not in a straight line. Scattered dark spots across a slope (versus a uniform worn look) are a hail signature, not normal aging.
- Collateral damage elsewhere on the property. Dinged fence caps, dented mailboxes, damaged window screens, or bruised siding are all proof a storm with real force came through your specific address — which matters if you’re trying to establish when the damage happened for a claim.
None of these alone proves you need a new roof — that’s what a free inspection is for. But if you’re seeing two or more of these, it’s worth having someone actually get up there and look.
